Moving History Teacher Job Position

JOB DESCRIPTION: Each Moving History Teacher works to implement Guardian Dance Company’s mission to cultivate healthy communities by practicing, performing and passing on African American culture through dance by providing instruction and professional development opportunities to students across Baltimore.


  • Provide movement and history instruction to 1-6 classes per week in Lindy Hop, West African Dance, Breaking, Swing Dance, Vernacular Jazz, Locking, and/or Baltimore Club.

  • Support a workforce development program by cooperating with young dancers participating in peer teaching.

  • Steward and manage a classroom.  

  • Participate in Professional Development and Continuing Education Classes to further technical skill;

  • Uphold Guardian’s mission, goals, philosophy and standards;

    • Work a part-time position of 1-8 hours weekly, and keep a written record of the use of those hours as a condition of your compensation.

  • Assess student progress and keep a written log of performance data;

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying levels of ability;

  • Manage Student Behavior;

  • Keep daily lesson plans;

  • Meet with another/ a team of other teachers for collaborative planning;

  • Communicate with BCPSS or other school staff to remain abreast of the progress of MH students;

  • Implement Progressive, Project-Based curriculum;

  • Connect curriculum with the mission and vision of Guardian Dance Company;

  • Aid in the organization and implementation of quarterly exhibitions of student work;

  • Aid in the development of positive community culture by supporting the design and implementation of annual events which invite residents, neighbors, parents and friends to participate in MH programming;

  • Aid in the design set, costumes, music, video and lighting for the production;

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each requirement with excellence. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  • Knowledge of African American Vernacular Repertoire including, but not limited to one or more of the following: Lindy Hop, Breaking, East Coast Swing, 30’s Jazz, Locking, Baltimore Club, West African Dance;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of African American history and its connection to social dances;

  • Organization;

  • Proficiency in imovie or other video production software;

  • Classroom Management Skills;

  • Curriculum Development abilities;

  • Flexibility;

  • Time Management;

  • A Full Session's commitment, 10 weeks at a time

Hours: 1-8/week

Total Week Commitment: 10-30

Hourly Compensation: $35/hr
