Sonya Kumar

Sonya joined Moving History as the Administrator in 2020.

Sonya is an Indian classical dancer, born and raised in Queens, NYC and now based in Tampa, FL since 2019. The preservation and sharing of cultural dance is a passion of hers, she enjoys learning about performing arts traditions from all around the world. She graduated from Hunter College with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and is currently a graduate student in Anthropology at Harvard University’s Extension School.

Sonya also has an Associate’s degree in Visual Presentation & Exhibition Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 2023, she completed a certificate in Performing Arts Industry Essentials from NYU | Tisch.

In 2012, Sonya was an Anthropology Intern in Asian Ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History, assisting in the labeling of Asian performing arts collections. She was also a CUNY Dance Major for 2 years, where she studied Ballet, Jazz, & Modern, took workshops with Alvin Ailey dancers and Robert Battle, and additional dance classes in Musical Theater, Hip Hop and Afro-Cuban. Between 2007-2019, she worked as a professional company dancer and dance teacher for two award-winning Indian dance companies and has performed in the USA, Canada, and India. For the past 15 years, Sonya has choreographed and taught various forms of Indian dance (classical, folk, & cinematic) to children and adults in NY, NJ, CT, and virtually.
